Businesses... Stop pestering your customers for charity donations!

Call me evil, I've been called that a lot lately but I'm getting a bit fed up with being hassled for donations at every business I visit.  It's bad enough I have to deal with the panhandlers outside the store so it's even more annoying to deal with it inside the store.

Look, I have no problem with businesses partnering with charitable causes and even having a collection bin but to use your employee's time to bark for the charity is a bit much.

I was at a Walgreens the other day picking up some discounted post Easter candy when the cashier asked if I'd like to donate to the charity red nose whatever.  I said not today and handed her some cash.  What annoyed me greatly was when she started to hand me my change, she held it back and asked if I'd like to donate the change.  Not acceptable.  No means no.  She pretty much was trying to guilt trip me into donating which makes me even less likely to donate.

When I do donate, it's something I want to do.  Many places like grocery stores have donation tags by the register.  It's bsically like a coupon with a barcode and you choose $1, $3 or $5 and you hand it to the cashier.  I like this type of donating much better than the cashier taking time away from their job to plug the charity.

Many restaurants do annual charity giveaways like Ben & Jerry's recently did.  In celebration of National Ice Cream Day, they gave away free cones, well, technically small scoops in a cup and each location teamed up with a local charity.  While there were ambassadors pitching the cause and buckets inside for donations, they weren't overly pushy so I'm cool with that.  It's not like they shamed anyone for not donating.  I didn't feel like I HAD to and I honestly didnt have anything to spare at the moment.  I was more concerned with the coneless ice cream cone.

Ultimately, my feeling with businesses and charities is that it should be transparent.  I honestly don't think the customers need to be hassled when they're already patronizing the store and under the assumption that the business donates goods, services or money to charitable causes.  It seems like overkill to ask your customers for more.

How to get cheap airfares and save money while flying

Virgin America Main Cabin Select Row 3
I had an empty row in Main Cabin Select on Virgin America.  Free upgrade due to Alaska MVP status.  A few passengers attempted to sit there but were asked for $150.

I travel a lot and unlike the old days, flying is generally cheaper than the train or Greyhound.

While flying can be expensive, it all depends on how much you value your time.

1.  Be loyal to one airline -
If you're a frequent traveler, try to only fly on one airline and its codeshare partners.  In the long run, it could benefit you with elite status, upgrades to first class, free checked bags, priority boarding AND free flights.  But if you're just an occasional traveler or once a year, then the airline choice is not important.  But on that note, there are two distinct types of airlines.  Discount and legacy airlines.  Discount airlines like Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant offer rock bottom fares but charge for everything else like choosing seats, printing tickets, checked AND carry on bags and more.  However, even the legacy airlines like Alaska, American Airlines, Delta and United also charge for some of the aforementioned things but usually have better on time performance.  Most of the legacy carriers have introduced base tickets to compete with the discount airlines so be very careful when checking out so you can understand any possible fees you may encounter.
Southwest falls in the middle but ultimately comes down to how far in advance you can book.  While there's no fees for the first two checked bags, the lowest fares are released 6 months out and only go up.  If you travel last minute like me, Southwest will not work out most of the time but it's certainly worth a look.

2.  Don't check fares too much unless you're ready to buy -
Fares go up and down all the time and there's worse feeling than finding the fare you saw yesterday is now $200 more today.  But when you're ready, use an aggregator like ITA Matrix to find the lowest fares and also have a looksie at southwest as they do not publish fares on 3rd party sites.

3.  Book two one-way tickets -
Sometimes you can save money by flying on different airlines for each leg.  Also, should a problem arise and you need to change a date, both legs won't be affected.  Almost all fares carry large fees to change tickets (any change, date, name, time of flight) and in many cases, it's cheaper to buy a new ticket.  I have had to abandon many tickets but ultimately it was cheaper to just buy a new ticket.

4.  Be flexible on dates and airports -
While this may not be practical for everyone, it can save a lot of money.  Departing on a nearby date can save a few dollars to hundreds of dollars.  Departing from a nearby airport can also save money.  If you won't be driving, you could depart and return from different airports for maximum savings potential.  Of course, there's risk involved with traveling to nearby airports as you still have to get to those airports.  Using a site like ITA Matrix by Google can allow you to search nearby airports up to thousands of miles which can be useful for international travel but could also allow you to visit other cities you have never been to.
Just remember direct flights generally cost more than connecting flights but that can always change.  Airlines lower certain fares on certain routes to balance out the flights so when there's an empty flight, that fare might go down and if there's a near full flight, the fare goes up.
This is also important for international travel.  Most direct flights operate once a day which means that there are limited seats to begin with.  If a connecting flight is offered, it will be routed on emptier flights.  You may add several hours of travel time but you might add several bills to your wallet.

5.  Sleep at the airport -
Again, not for everyone but sometimes the cheapest flights depart early in the morning or late at night and or arrive at odd hours.  I don't drive and rely on public transportation so this works out for me as it saves a night in a hotel.  Most airports are open 24 hours (ticketing and baggage area) and as long as you have proof of your ticket, you shouldn't be bothered.  Just keep your valuables secured.

6.  Volunteer to give up your seat -
Pack carry on only.  This may not work for everyone but this allows you to be more flexible and nimble in the event your flight is oversold.  You can get vouchers for future travel and occasionally cash for giving up your seat and taking a later flight.  Passengers with no connections and no checked luggage are chosen first as it's faster and easier for the airline to bump you.

7.  Check the calendar -
If you're finding the fares not to your liking, there may be a reason.  Check to see if there's a major convention in town, major sporting event or maybe it's spring break.  Know the times of the year when people travel. 3 day weekends, holidays, spring break, winter break and summer.  Try to avoid these times but if you must travel, book at least 3 months ahead.  Fares just go up during the high demand periods.  Just remember you're not the only one trying to go somewhere!

8.  Book directly through the airline -
While I do use ITA Matrix to locate my desired fare as it's very effective, I ALWAYS book through the airline directly.  Why?  Because there's less chance for errors, lost itinaries and fraud.  When you go searching all willy nilly for 'cheap airfare' and you find something that looks too good to be true, IT IS.  If you're a frequent flier member, you'll always want to book directly to ensure you're getting your benefits and earning miles.

9.  Be nice -
While this really isn't a tip to save money, it's just good manners and can go a long ways when your flight is delayed or cancelled.  Agents are much more willing to help you when you're polite and understanding.  Yes, they know it sucks to have the carpet pulled out from under you and you have a big meeting in Sausalito tomorrow but sometimes it's just out of their control and they will get you to your destination as soon as possible.  Ask if there's any other routes you could take, fee based seats such as preferred seating, premium economy or first class.  It might be easier to pay a small fee than wait.  Lastly, you could always throw in 'is rule 240 applicable?'  Rule 240 is an unofficial program that is still used by most airlines.  Simply put, it states that if your original flight is delayed and or cancelled and there's another airline with non-stop service that can get you there sooner than your airline AND there are open seats, your airline could put you on that flight.  There are a few more rules of course but if your delay is more the 3 hours, start tossing around rule 240.  Weather related delays and cancellations are not covered.  Also, there has to be another airline serving the exact same route.

Thanks for slugging through my ramblings and hopefully you found something that you could use.  With airlines merging and going bankrupt, it's becoming more of a sellers market, IE the airlines have you by the neck because there's few or no other choices.  It's a bummer because competition is good for the consumer.

Safe travels!

How to save money when ordering pizza from Pizza Hut, Papa John's or Domino's Pizza

If there's one thing that most people can agree on, it's that pizza makes a great meal.  But pizza prices have been creeping up along with the delivery fees, taxes and tips.  So how can you be sure you're getting the best deal?  Well, you can follow some of my tips for starters!

1.  Carry out if at all possible.  Most pizza places have great deals but only for carry out.  You can still order online or through the mobile app but you can definitely get a break in price by not having your pizza delivered.  Some specials are only good for carry out.  You technically don't have to tip but a dollar or two is still nice.

2.  If you must have it delivered, try Sarpino’s!  They still have free delivery but unfortunately Saprino's is mainly in the mid-west.  Check your local pizza joints.  Many still offer free delivery as it's an edge over the big three.  But if you do order from Pizza Hut, Papa John's or Domino's Pizza for delivery, keep in mind that the delivery fee is not a tip so that's another few bucks!

3.  ALWAYS check the specials page.  This is the scam of most pizza joints.  Well, not really scam but it's how they operate.  Take a peak at the full menu prices at Papa John's and then look at the specials and you'll likely see that the price difference can be 50% or more.  Right now, the full price for a large specialty pizza is $21 but the price on the specials page is $13.  So be careful of other offers like 25% or 50% off because that's off the full menu prices.   You may get a coupon in your email and the specials on the website may very well be cheaper!  So it pays to spend a few minutes checking the deals.  You might want a medium pizza but it might be cheaper to get a large.

4.  NEVER order without a coupon or special!  If you order off the menu, you're paying FULL price which is what they want you to do.  They WILL NOT tell you that you could save 50% using a coupon.  You have to already know this.

5.  Join the rewards program.  Pizza Hut, Papa John's or Domino's Pizza all have rewards programs now which can earn you free pizzas, bread sticks or other items. These usually go based on what you actually spend while you can get bonus points sometimes for ordering certain items.  In general, it's a good deal.  But of course, if you have a free pizza delivered, you still have to pay the delivery fee and tip so best to combine a reward with a large order.

6.  If you're old school and still order by phone, ALWAYS ask if they have any specials if you don't have a coupon.  Again, I reiterate, they will not freely offer discounts, you must ask!

7.  Order some for now, some for later.  Due to the big delivery fees nowadays, you might consider ordering an extra pizza or two, especially if you get a good coupon special.  Wrap the extra pizza in foil and toss it in the freezer for a rainy day.

How to go up in the John Hancock building in Chicago for free!

If you’re in Chicago and want to get a fantastic view of the city and Lake Michigan, then there are two places to go, the Willis Tower and the John Hancock Center.  While I have no tips for the Willis Tower, I can tell you that you can go up the John Hancock Center for free, well, almost free.  The Signature Room on the 95th floor and the Signature Lounge on the 96th offer both free admissions.  The only catch is you have to order an entrĂ©e at the restaurant or order at least one drink in the lounge.  You won’t be able to access the observation deck but you’re only a few floors below that and still get the same spectacular view.

As you can imagine, the prices are as high as the building but if you’re going to pay to get the view, you may as well get a drink with it!  I enjoy hanging out in the lounge in the early afternoon while sipping a fine whiskey on the rocks.  Just make sure it’s a clear day if you want to get some good pictures.  It does get crowded at night so try to get in late afternoon or early evening if you want to see the light of the city.  If you plan on eating in the restaurant, reservations are a must.  A limited bar menu is served in the lounge.  Think small appetizers and sandwiches but the quality is top notch.

So the next time your in Chicago or if you need to impress your friends, take the free ride to the 95th or 96th and enjoy a fine meal or drink with your view.

The entrance is on the south side of the building by the Chase Bank, not the observation entrance.

This policy is fairly common at any observation tower with a restaurant and bar.

People who take pictures of themselves wearing merchandise at stores

Something I've noticed lately is people at stores who like to take pictures of themselves with merchandise like funky or quirky hat or shirts with catchy slogans and then they leave without buying anything.  Then they post the pictures on social media as if they did buy it.  Really?

Apparently this is such an epidemic that I've seen signs at different souvenir shops strictly forbidding just that. I guess with the advent of phones with cameras, it has become so easy to snap of picture of just about anything at anytime that we forget that not everything needs to be photographed.

I’m not sure if it’s just me but I think it’s not only tacky to take a photo of something like at a gift shop, it’s almost stealing.  I mean, you are getting the photographic satisfaction as if you had purchased the item.  What happens when someone down the road wants to see ‘that’ hat or shirt but then of course you don’t really have it, doesn’t that make you look like a fool?  I think so.  Then on the store’s behalf, people who constantly handle the merchandise without buying it damage the merchandise which causes lost revenue.  So do yourself and businesses a favor.  Just buy it!
