Photos from my 2006 New York Trip - Page 1 - Ed Sullivan Theater Late Show

These pics are from my 2006 trip to New York City.  Didn't have a ton of money so walked around a lot and checked out the popular tourist's traps.

Apps I use: Tunity (listen to audio on your smartphone from a TV you can't hear)

Have you ever been at a restaurant, bar or a waiting room with a silent TV but you wished you could hear the audio?  Well, with the Tunity app, you can!  I run into this situation a lot at sports bars.  They'll only have the audio on for the main game but I usually want to watch another game and have to settle for just the visuals rather than the full effect.  But with the Tunity app, I can scan the TV I'm watching and have the audio right on my phone.  This app can come in handy for many other situations as well.  You can watch TV in bed with your spouse without disturbing them, sitting in waiting rooms, hear what's going on when watching TV through windows from the sidewalk (if your a sports fan, you've done this) or hear the audio in noisy places like airports which is where I discovered this app.  Sitting in the gate area with CNN in the corner with the audio being drowned out every two minutes from a loud announcement, this app can bring calm during chaos.

You can download the app from the link below.  It's available for both Apple and Android platforms.

Once you've installed the app, you'll be prompted register for free.  Open the app and you'll see the box below.  Make sure the TV is within the box and hit the tap the scan.

For best results, you should fill the box with the TV image.  But the above image was sufficient.

Once you have the channel synced, you can use the backwards and forwards buttons to fine tune the sync.  You may have to play around with this as sometimes your audio feed might be a second or two behind what's on TV.

Troubleshooting:
The only time I've run into issues was with national broadcast networks like Fox, CBS etc or shows that were on multiple channels such as Presidential debates.  In those instances, it would sync to a different channel so the actual show was right but the commercials were not.  This of course is not a big deal as I'm not watching TV for the commercials (most of the time anyways).

Most local affiliates won't be available but you can easily request support within the app.  No word on how often the requests are fulfilled.  Also, even with cable networks, the commercials will occasionally be out of sync due to local ad and national ads but the actual show will always be slotted the same.

All in all, it's a great app that's free with no ads!  Obviously, this app requires internet access as it's streaming audio.

Do Reality TV shows benefit or hurt the industries they cover?

Reality TV.  It seems that there is a show for just about any industry, occupation or lifestyle.  Deadliest Catch, Storage Wars, Pawn Stars, Parking Wars, Gold Rush, Extreme Couponing and many more.  I’m not talking about game shows like Survivor, The Amazing Race, Big Brother, America’s Got Talent or anything like that.  We all like to see someone else succeed in their business cause it gives us normal folk inspiration and hope that we can do it too.  But do these shows do more harm than good?

I like Pawn Stars to a certain extent because it shows the business aspect of the pawn industry and the team at Pawn Stars for the most part, seem to be on the level and ethical.  Obviously, when selling or pledging your items to a pawn shop, it comes down to who offers the best deal.  Most customers fail to realize that a pawn shop has to buy an item at a price where they can make a profit when they sell it.  But I have seen many instances where the staff of Pawn Stars have gone above and beyond the ethical standards to ensure that their customers are getting a fair deal, even when the customers tend to be ill-informed or greedy.  I’ll use the Faberge Spider Brooch as an example.  The seller came in asking for $2,000 for her brooch which she did not know much about.  The “Old Man” without hesitation offered $15,000 as his final offer but yet the woman decided that if he would offer $15k, he would offer more.  While there is speculation to whether or not the brooch was authentic, the point is that the “Old Man” could have just took her $2,000 offer and made a killing but he knew based on his knowledge of the item that a fair offer was considerably higher than the customer asked for.

On the other end of the spectrum, I think the show Shipping Wars may be bad for the independent the shipping industry.  After seeing the first season of Shipping Wars, I would more than likely not use the site uShip to ship my precious items.  Grant it that any reality TV series only represents a tiny fraction of the industry, I still feel it represents the industry as a whole.  If one person is doing their job a particular way, then more than likely others are as well.  Seeing how the drivers handled their loads and their equipment would cause me to be leery of trusting them with my stuff.  But I guess that’s what insurance is for.  Ironically, I did ship some things cross country using Uship and there were a few hiccups but my stuff did make it within the window.  I'll share this story sometime.

In some instances, I think these shows serve as a vehicle for recruiting new people.  After watching a season of Deadliest Catch, who wouldn’t feel compelled to try it for a season?  Perhaps you might want to hunt down a gold claim to dig for riches?  Wrestle crocodiles in the Bayou?  Buy a storage unit and see what treasures it may hold?

It’s important to note that while it looks easy to go buy five hundred dollars worth of groceries for five dollars with your satchel of coupons, very few people can pull it off.  Of all the lockers you see on Storage Wars, they only show the best stuff and hilarious items but only a fraction of the footage they gather.

In the end, it’s up to the viewer to decide what the show does for them.  Most people just watch the shows because they are interesting but some people find that these shows light that spark to try something different.

Storage Wars TV Show

I'll take door number 2 please

Storage Wars on A&E is quite an interesting show as just about everyone at one time or another has had to put some or all of their belongings in storage.  For most people, it’s just temporary but some people forget to pay their storage, can’t pay or perhaps pass away and told no one that they had a storage unt.  For the latter, people like those on Storage Wars are there to purchase your belongings and sell it off to make their living.

I have a storage unit right now and I have everything own in the 5 by 10 foot confines.  I pay $82 bucks a month and quite honestly, at auction, this unit would get 10 bucks at the most and the poor sap who bought my junk would probably toss it all away.  It’s quite sad really.  What is greatly important and sentimental to me would be worthless to the next person.  I’m almost tempted to go get a unit and fill it top to bottom with empty TV, computer and electronics boxes.  Such a bidding war would ensue that would empty the pockets of the person with the most cash only to be devasted after opening the first box.

Many people have wondered if some or all of the units are staged by the producers. I would have to say no.  People put just about anything in storage and sometimes chit happens and the next thing you know, it’s auction time.  A few years back, I did some day labor for an auction company but they it a bit differently.  Rather than sell where is as is, they took the contents of each unit and displayed them in berths at their auction house so you could at least see most of the contents before digging into your pockets.  There were definitely some valuables tucked away.  Boxes of jewery.  Electronics in original boxes.  And countless books, CD’s and DVD’s.  I can see why storage buyers are interested in what they do.

As for the cast, I enjoy Barry Weiss the most.  If I ever was set in life, I too think I could get into this, just to look for stuff for myself.  The rest of the characters are probably typical of the rest of the buyers, there to make a buck.  I will say that often times, their estimates seem rather high and would be interested to know what their actual profits are.  There's a lot of rounding up, like from three bucks to the nearest hundred.

In the end, Storage Wars does entertain me as a TV show should of course.  I look forward to new episodes and perhaps, one day, one of my “special” units may appear on this show.
